After a quick morning ride with Sam alongside the San Miguel River near Telluride, Alan packed the car and strapped the bikes onto the roof rack. When Purdy finally emerged from a prolonged visit to the kitchen and good-byes to Cilla and Teri, Alan pointed to Sam’s bike chain and told him he had a problem.

“Jammed dérailleur,” he said.

“Can you fix it?”

“Sure. After we find Rachel Baumann and confirm that she was indeed born Rachel Misker.”

Purdy was suspicious that his bike’s dérailleur problem had been caused by Alan’s own brand of petty sabotage, and he was briefly tempted to march into the town of Telluride carrying the bike on his shoulder until he found a bicycle mechanic who would put the chain back on for him.

After a glance at his watch and some calculations, he relented to Alan’s demand. He realized that by the time they got settled in Ouray it was going to be well after noon and he wouldn’t have yet had lunch. Finding an attorney named Rachel in a town the size of Ouray, he quickly decided, shouldn’t delay his midday meal by more than ten minutes.
